How to Apply for Membership and Professional Registration

Check Competencies
Check that you meet the competencies for registration at one of the grades offered by the IED. See the page on 'Professional Registration' from the header bar above for links to the various registrations available.

Choose Grade
Choose the grade that is most appropriate for your level of experience and competence. if you are not sure which grade is most applicable to you, please seek guidance from an IED staff member (membership@ied.org.uk) or via telephone on 01373 822801.

Submit the Documents
Submit the form, professional review report and supporting evidence (academic qualifications and CV) with the appropriate application fee to cover both membership and registration assessment. Please see the link to the right for the application form and guidance documents.

Application Examined by IED Staff
A member of staff at the IED will conduct an initial review of the application and request more details if necessary.

Membership Committee Assessment
Once everything is in place, the application will be passed to the Membership Committee for assessment. The application will be reviewed by trained volunteer Members who will assess the content against the set of competencies for the chosen grade of registration. They may at this point request further details.

Interview Organised and Held
If the committee approves the application, IED staff will appoint two suitably qualified and registered Members to conduct the Professional Review Interview. The assessors will contact you to arrange a mutually convenient date and venue for the interview and you will be sent details of how to prepare. You will also be asked about any special arrangements for the interview such as access or provision of a hearing aid loop. Photographic ID is requested at this point for verification.

Interview Results - Ratification
After interview the assessment sheets and results are passed back to the Committee for discussion and ratification.

Final Decision
After the Committee meeting, the final decision is reported to you by the IED staff.

Complete Formalities
On offer of registration, you will need to complete and engagement form agreeing to abide by the IED's Code of Conduct and return it, with the completion fee plus the first year's subscriptions and registration fees as detailed in the offer letter.

Congratulations!
On receipt of the above, Membership and registration will be confirmed. You will be sent a welcome pack including a copy of the latest Engineering Designer journal, a Membership certificate and an IED lapel badge. Your details will also be passed to the Engineering Council or Society for the Environment if your registration is with one of those bodies - they will contact you with a registration certificate.
