Celebrating Success
Every year the IED seeks and considers nominations for a number of awards to promote and recognise outstanding achievement in the industry. Nominations for most of the awards are invited from the membership annually, and recipients are chosen by Council and their delegates on the strength of the nominations against stated criteria of each award. If you would like to make a nomination for any of the awards, please submit details including the name of the nominee and up to four paragraphs explaining why they have been nominated to ied@ied.org.uk. The deadline for nominations is 31 December each year. The current list of awards includes the following listed on this page - those that are not open to public nomination are marked.
The Founder’s Award
The Founder’s Award was introduced in 1986 in honour of the Founder of the Institution Mr WE Walters, who was also for many years its Secretary. It is presented annually for ‘Distinguished Services to the Institution of Engineering Designers.’ This award is not open for public nomination.
The Hills Millennium Award
The Hills Millennium Award is presented annually by the Institution to an international designer who has made a major contribution to the professional areas of Engineering Design, and/or Product Design, which is in line with the aims of the IED. The cup was presented to the Institution in 2000 from Professor Peter Hills and his wife to mark the millennium and the period Professor Hills served as President of the IED. Past winners of the award include Dorian Marjanovic, Crispin Hales, Frank Stephenson and Marcus Engman.
'Inspire, Support and Achieve' Award
The Gerald Frewer Memorial Trophy is awarded for outstanding contributions in the field of engineering design, design management, education and training or design philosophy. Previous winners include Zoe Laughlin, Sebastian Conran, Thomas Heatherwick and Cecil Balmond.
Promotion of Design Award
The Promotion of Design Award was introduced in 2009 to award an individual or team for their work in promoting engineering design to a wider audience. Previous winners include the Bloodhound Project, Maggie Philbin, Tim Peake and Rob Bell.
The Alex Moulton Award
The Alex Moulton Award, presented in memory of Dr Alex Moulton, Honorary Fellow of the Institution, is awarded to an individual or a company in recognition of development of an innovative product. Previous winners include Jonathan Ive, Pete Lomas, Andrew Ritchie and Team UnLimbited.
The Geoff Kirk Young Members Award
The Geoff Kirk Young Members Award was introduced in 2011 by Professor Geoff Kirk to mark his time as President of the Institution. The aim of the award is to recognise up and coming young members of the Institution, to highlight their career to date and to promote the future of engineering to the wider membership. We encourage nominations from our younger members who can nominate themselves and from those who work with younger members who they think deserve recognition.
The Kathbert Trophy
The Kathbert Trophy is awarded by the Membership Committee annually to an individual who has excelled in their recent application for professional registration. This award is not open for public nomination.
The Hornsby Cup
The Hornsby Cup is selected by the Editorial Committee and presented annually by the Institution for the best article published in its journal ‘Engineering Designer’. This award is not open for public nomination.
Medals of Appreciation
Medals of Appreciation are awarded by Council at their discretion to recognise the contribution of individuals to the Institution, typically for special projects to further the goals of the IED. Medals of appreciation are not open for public nomination.
